What Are The Most Common Welding Gases?
Get your welding gas from Symank Energy
If you do any welding or are familiar with the welding process, you know that there is plenty to think about and consider. You have to make sure you are staying safe as you weld. You have to think about the accessories and equipment you need. And you have to determine exactly what kind of welding gas is going to help you get whatever job you are working on done.
The different types of welding gas
There are two main categories when it comes to welding gas:
- Inert gas: Gases that do not change or instigate change when they are mixed with additional substances
- Reactive gas: These gases do either change or contribute to a change within another substance
Within these two categories is a selection of different welding gases. Let’s take a close look at what they are:
- Nitrogen: This gas can help with weld penetration as well as arc stability when being used with another type of gas.
- Argon: Argon is a popular gas choice for welding, stainless steel, aluminum and carbon steel.
- Hydrogen: Hydrogen is another option for weld penetration when it is mixed with argon and carbon dioxide.
- Propylene: When your goal is fusion welding, heating or brazing, propylene is the impure gas that is typically recommended to help you get the job done.
- Carbon dioxide: If a professional looking finished product is what you are looking for, look no further than carbon dioxide mixed with argon.
- Helium: Helium, a gas that uses higher temperatures to weld, works best when it is mixed with argon.
- Oxygen: When you need to get a welding job done quickly, you can count on oxygen.
- Acetylene: Acetylene can be used on most metals and is recommended when there is a need to cut metals.
When it comes to picking the type of gas that you need for a welding project there are a few different things to think about, including what is actually available for purchase, what kind of metal your welding project includes, how much gas you want to buy, what you want your finished product to look like and how durable you want your finished product to be.
Welding equipment
A welding project requires more than just gas. Let’s take a look at some additional welding equipment a welder may need to achieve a finished product, all of which we carry at Symank Energy’s Madionsville, Texas location:
