How Long Does A Propane Tank Last?
A look at the equipment’s lifespan
If you are a homeowner who uses propane to power appliances and equipment around your home and if you have a propane tank on your property, there are all sorts of important things to know about that tank. You need to know how full it can be at any given time, how to care for it in the winter and colder weather and how many years you can expect it to last.
A look at a propane tank’s lifespan
Propane tanks are not like a lot of the other equipment and appliances we use that constantly need to be exchanged or upgraded. Instead, they are intentionally built to last a long time, which is good news for any homeowner and propane customer.
Underground propane tanks will usually last about 20 to 30 years (the exact time frame depends on the kind of soil it is in and if it was properly installed).
Aboveground tanks and propane cylinders will typically last about 30 years and can sometimes last even longer.
Getting as many years as possible out of your propane tank comes down to proper maintenance. Your tank needs to be cared for. You can do this by:
- Protecting it from extreme weather: If it snows or gets icy, clear this snow and ice off your tank immediately. This decreases your chances of a gas leak.
- Keeping your tank full: You never want your fuel levels to drop so much that your tank can’t maintain a sufficient amount of pressure. Just remember that you never want your tank to be more than 80% full at a time. Filling your tank beyond this point is a safety hazard!
- Filling your tank before winter: It is particularly important to fill your propane tank before the winter officially arrives.
- Watch for clogs: Make sure your tank’s regulator vent doesn’t become clogged or filled with stuff like snow and ice.
- Scheduling routine professional maintenance: Professional maintenance is the best way to ensure your tank is working properly and can help catch any small issues before they turn into potential massive problems.
