How Many Propane Tank Sizes Are There?
When you need a new tank come to Symank Energy
Picking out a propane tank for your home is not a one size fits all process. In fact, propane tanks come in a wide variety of sizes and many factors should be considered when trying to select the size that will work best for you and your home.
Common propane tank sizes
Let’s take a look at the six common sizes that propane tanks typically come in and what exactly they can be used for:
- 40-pounds to 100-pound cylinders: These smaller size cylinders are ideal to use to power a gas grill, patio heaters, outdoor cooking equipment and RVs.
- 120-gallon tanks: When you are just using propane to power a single appliance or piece of equipment such as a water heater, space heater, clothes dryer or a cooking range, a propane tank of this size can get the job done.
- 150-gallon tanks: We recommend using a tank of this size to power one or two low BTU appliances (this includes clothes dryers, water heaters, cooking ranges, space heaters and wall heaters).
- 250-gallon tanks: When it comes to powering three or more home appliances such as cooking ranges, water heaters or gas fireplaces, this size propane tank is recommended. Propane tanks of this size cannot provide enough fuel for home heating through a furnace or a boiler.
- 500-gallon tanks: If you are looking to heat your home with propane, you are going to need at least a 500-gallon propane tank. While heating your home with a tank this size, you can also power fireplaces, cooking ranges and water heaters.
- 800 to 1,000-gallon tanks: Larger tanks in this size range are typically reserved for large homes or small commercial businesses that are using propane for heating purposes in addition to powering several other appliances such as spa and pool heaters.
Understanding your propane tank
When you are figuring out what size propane tank to get for your particular property, it is important to understand that propane tanks should never actually be 100% full. Propane tanks should actually only ever be filled to the 80% mark. This is protocol for safety reasons and gives the fuel the room it needs to expand, which it will do as temperatures rise.
Therefore, a 120-gallon tank does not hold 120 gallons of propane – it actually only holds about 100 gallons.
How large your home is, what appliances you are looking to power with propane, the condition of those appliances and how much propane you anticipate using on an annual basis are all factors that will impact what size propane tank you need.
