Picking the right welding gas for stainless steel

Argon is a go-to welding gas choice if you are working with carbon steel, aluminum or stainless steel. In fact, this gas is the standard gas choice for the majority of stainless steel welding projects.

Welders working with stainless steel can also mix argon with both helium and carbon dioxide. The combination of these three gases helps with heat input, penetration and arc stability.

Other types of welding gas

While argon and argon mixed with helium and carbon dioxide is ideal for stainless steel, there are plenty of other types of welding gas that work well for different kinds of projects.

Welders can choose between nitrogen, hydrogen, propylene, helium, oxygen and acetylene to help get their jobs done.

Some of these gases are inert (meaning that they do not change or instigate change when mixed with other substances) and some are reactive (meaning that they do change or contribute to a change within another substance).
