Gas Mixtures for Stainless Steel Welding
Symank Energy can help with your next welding project
For welders, picking the right welding gas for your work is not a one size fits all process. In fact, the type of gas that you need may vary from project to project.
So how does a welder know which type of welding gas he or she is going to need? Symank Energy can help you answer that question!
How to pick the right type of welding gas
There are a few factors to consider when you are deciding what type of welding gas to use for a welding project. This includes:
- The type of metal that you plan on using
- How much gas you will need and are wanting to purchase
- What type of gas you are actually able to find and buy
- How you want your finished welding product to look
- How strong you want your finished welding product to be
The right welding gas for working with stainless steel
Welders who work with stainless steel often select argon as their gas of choice. Argon is actually the standard gas choice for the majority of stainless steel welding projects.
This gas is also recommended when working with carbon steel and aluminum.
Argon can be mixed with helium and carbon dioxide to help with heat input, penetration and arc stability for stainless steel projects.
Additional welding gas options
There are plenty of other welding gases out there on the market in addition to argon, helium and carbon dioxide. Hydrogen, acetylene, nitrogen, oxygen and propylene are additional gas options that welders can use.
Hydrogen can be mixed with argon and carbon dioxide to help with weld penetration.
Acetylene can assist with cutting a majority of metals.
Nitrogen can help a welder with penetration as well as with arc stability when used alongside another gas.
Oxygen helps you complete welding jobs quickly.
Propylene is recommended if you are fusion welding, heating or brazing your materials.
Some of the above welding gases do not change or instigate change when mixed with other substances. This puts them in the category of being inert. Others do change or contribute to a change within another substance and are, therefore, considered to be reactive.
What else do you need besides welding gas?
Selecting a welding gas for your project is a big step. However, there are additional materials and supplies that a welder needs to tackle his or her jobs.
A cart or a table provides a safe and comfortable set up for a welder to get his or her work done. This could be a metal workbench or a rolling cart that has a designated spot for a welder and a welder bottle. You want these tables and carts to be sturdy and durable. Some of them are also portable, which adds flexibility to your workspace.
Every welder should wear protective gear when working to stay safe. This includes gloves, respirators, auto-dimming welding helmets and safety glasses.
The other accessories that welders commonly use are plasma cutters, measuring tools, welding clamps and angle grinders.
You can get all the above welding supplies here at Symank Energy. The products we carry are top quality and are designed to help keep you safe throughout any welding job.
