What Type of Welding Gas Do I Need?

How to figure out what kind is right for you

Welders, like most of us, make decisions everyday. One of those decisions has to do with the type of welding gas that they use.

There are a bunch of different types of welding gas out there on the market. So how does a welder know what type of welding gas he or she needs?

Types of welding gases

Before we get into answering the above question, it’s important to have a basic understanding of the various different kinds of welding gases that are available.

Welding gases are either inert (these gases don’t change or instigate change when mixed with other substances) or reactive (these gases do change or can make other substances change).

Here is a breakdown of some of the specific kinds of welding gases that are available:

• Argon: Argon is most commonly used to weld stainless steel and aluminum. It can also weld carbon steel.
• Propylene: This is an impure gas that is best for non-structural fusion welding, heating and brazing.
• Helium: This gas tends to use higher temperatures to weld and it works best when combined with argon.
• Acetylene: This gas is good for cutting and welding most metals since it ignites a very hot flame.
• Oxygen: If you are looking for a faster welding process with fewer spatters, oxygen can help.
• Carbon dioxide: When carbon dioxide is mixed with argon a welder will be able to achieve a very professional looking finished product.
• Hydrogen: When mixed with argon and carbon dioxide, hydrogen can help with weld penetration.
• Nitrogen: Similar to hydrogen, nitrogen can also help with weld penetration in addition to arc stability when it’s combined with other gases.

How to pick a welding gas

Clearly, there is a selection when it comes to the different kinds of welding gases that are available. So how do you pick the one that is right for you?

There are a few factors to consider that will help you answer this question:

• Availability: Obviously, if you are a welder who is trying to get a job done you will want to choose a gas that is accessible and available.
• What you want your finished product to look like: Different welding gases will have different affects on the appearance and form of your finished product.
• How much of a supply you want to purchase: Using welding gases that are more reactive cuts down on how much welding gas you need to use so if you are only in need of a small supply of welding gas, you may want to consider a more reactive gas.
• How strong you want your finished product to be: If you are looking for a stronger and thicker bond, consider a welding gas that will give you this result instead of one that allows metal to be more flexible.
• The kind of metal you’re using: As outlined above, some gases work best and are most commonly used with specific types of metals.
