Why Isn’t My Propane Tank 100% Full After Delivery?
Spoiler alert: it’s a safety precaution
After getting your propane tank refilled, you most likely expect it to be 100% full. However, if you have ever examined your tank after a refill, you probably realized pretty quickly that this was not actually the case.
No, this was not a mistake made by whoever delivered your fuel. There is actually a really good reason why your propane tank should never be 100% full.
Propane Tank Levels
Here are some general guidelines that Symank Energy recommends when it comes to filling your propane tank:
Do not fill your tank past the 80% point. This will leave the room your fuel needs to expand and contract as temperatures rise (this will inevitably happen since the propane that goes into the tank is in liquid form). Filling a tank past this point is actually dangerous and puts you, your home and your family at risk.
The second rule is to not let your fuel levels drop below the 20% point. When you notice that your tank is at this point you should schedule your next propane delivery. This will help prevent you from running out of fuel entirely and gives you a little flexibility in terms of scheduling a delivery with your provider.
It is also important to keep in mind that, based on the above 80% full rule, your propane tank is larger than the amount of fuel in it. Just because you have a 120-gallon propane tank does not mean that there are 120 gallons of propane in that tank. In fact a tank of this size only safely holds about 100 gallons of fuel at a time.
The good news is that propane tank gauges are usually pretty easy to read. They have a marker that lines up with a number that indicates (in a percentage) how full your tank is. However, if taking the time to read and stay on top of your fuel levels doesn’t sound like something you want to do, Symank Energy has a solution for you.
